Do you remember the outbreak of cyclospora that happened over the summer?
The president of Fresh Express (which turns out to be part of Chiquita Brands) recently received a warning letter from the FDA. These letters are issued when the FDA considers that a manufacturer has seriously violated federal regulations. This warning letter to Fresh Express basically says that your food safety plan isn’t sufficient because you do not have a preventive control step for cyclospora even after the outbreak. For cyclospora, a supply chain control is necessary to prevent the parasite being in bags of salad. This would include auditing your suppliers better as well as putting in a program of seasonal environmental testing for cyclospora.
I just heard that Fresh Express has a recall for salad kits due to a risk of E. coli STEC 026. Check your fridges!!
