While the West Coast burns, what can we do about the wildfires? Image from Pixabay.
I am concerned about how the wildfires in the CA, OR and WA are altering our food supply. While it is too early to tell, there are already farmers that are rebuilding and recovering from the loss of property, livestock, and equipment. Additionally some farmers are having to harvest while the air is full of ash and smoke.
The wildfires are early this year, so they are affecting the harvest and vintners are concerned about the effect of smoke on the final wine. I imagine this year’s grape harvest might be small and 2020 might be a special wine year for West Coast wines.
I am concerned about small farmers, especially as I read that farm insurance doesn’t cover the full cost of rebuilding, so I donated to the CA Family Farmers Emergency Fund. Perhaps you could donate too!
