As a long time vegetarian, I have been reading and watching the growing plant-based food trend with interest. If there had been so many options when I first became vegetarian in the mid 1980s, life would have been simpler! Personally though I find the new plant-based foods aren’t really for me - they are marketed towards people who traditionally eat meat and want to change up their diet a little and feel better about the environment.
But how do we know if food is vegetarian, vegan and/plant-based? When I first became vegetarian it was when I lived in England. There the Vegetarian Society allows food that met their strict criteria to carry a Vegetarian Society Trademark. There hasn’t been anything like this in the US. Until now! FoodChain has started a Global Food ID program for labeling these foods.
