This Friday, May 7, is the deadline for vendors wishing to submit an application for USDA’s commodity food boxes for TEFAP. This replaces the Farm Fresh Food Boxes that were started last year as a response to the pandemic. This solicitation is an opportunity for food hubs, farmers, food distributors provided fresh produce to the USDA. There is more information here is you are interested.
TEFAP is the emergency food assistance program which has been called a poorer sibling to SNAP (aka food stamps). Through TEFAP, the USDA purchases a variety of nutritious, high-quality American-grown foods, and makes those foods available to State Distributing Agencies. The amount of food each State receives out of the total amount of food provided is based on the number of unemployed persons and the number of people with incomes below the poverty level who live in the State. The food is most often distributed by community organizations, like food banks and soup kitchens, that were selected by the individual States. Feeding America says TEFAP is critical for the success of its partener food banks.
