Report on Lead in Drinking Water
No amount of lead in drinking water is safe and a recent report from Consumer Reports shows that many Americans have too much lead in their tap water with nearly 80% of homes in a nationwide study of 345 homes have detectable levels of lead in their water! Lead is a serious problem for babies and toddlers as it can affect their intellectual development.
Getting your water tested is the first step. After that if you find your lead levels are high, use an appropriate water filter. Consumer Reports recommends a pour through filter that has NSF/ANSI 53 certified to remove total lead. If you are processing and using water as an ingredient, it is worth investing in an NSF/ANSI 58 certified reverse osmosis filter that attaches to your plumbing.
The EPA also running cold water for 45 seconds every morning before drinking water. This clears out any water that’s been sitting overnight in the pipes. Additionally always using cold water for drinking, cooking, and baby formula because hot water can cause metals to leach from pipes.
