The US food system lurches from crisis to crisis. From shortages during the pandemic, to COVID-19 spreading among meatpackers, unequal access to farmland which penalize Black, Indigenous and other minorities, and the long-term issue of food insecurity leaving too many people not knowing where their next meal is coming from coupled with increasing rates of diabetes and obesity,, we need to change our food system.
I find it shocking that we don’t currently have a federal strategy for food and agriculture. Fortunately,I am not alone. The Law Schools at Harvard and Vermont recently released a report called “The Urgent Call for a U.S. National Food Strategy”. This report, an update to their 2017 “Blueprint for a National Food Strategy” calls for a coordinated federal approach to food and agricultural law and policy making.
Let me know in the comments whether or not you think we need a national food and agricultural strategy? What will support our food system and make it more safe, resilient, sustainable, equitable and healthy?
