Over a third of food recalls are due to mislabelling mostly because an allergen is missing.
Even Frito-Lay struggles to get that right.
Mislabelling may not seem like a serious problem; it could be deadly if you do suffer from a food allergen.
Frito-Lay failed to get their labeling correct because they weren’t in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices Hazard Analysis, and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Human Food regulations. Specifically they weren’t following their own policies and procedures when they changed product, so the wrong product went in the wrong bag.
FDA states that “your bags of potato chips labeled “Ruffles Original Potato Chips” containing Ruffles Cheddar & Sour Cream Potato Chips” and insufficient cleaning and sanitation between products meant that Lay’s Limón Flavored Potato Chips were made so that milk allergen was present in the final product when not listed on the label.
