Unlike yesterday’s recall of canned beans, kissing chickens has caused illnesses. According to the CDC in 2021 so far there have been 163 illnesses with 24 hospitalizations in 43 states from people catching Salmonella after kissing a chicken from a backyard flock.
The CDC recommends that if you have a backyard flock or visit someone with a backyard flock to follow these guidelines
Wash your hands after handling either the chickens or the eggs
Do not kiss or snuggle the chickens
Do not eat or drink around the flock
Keep your flock and their supplies outside of your house
Change your clothes especially your shoes after tending your birds
Supervise children around flocks
Don’t let children under 5 touch poultry, ducks or other backyard birds
Handle eggs carefully; don’t eat broken eggs; store them properly
Have fun with your chicken flock too!
