Recently, I attended a webinar on Dismantling Forced Labor in Supply Chains presented by A Growing Culture. It was an excellent introduction into the issues faced by US farmworkers and how the Coalition of Immokalee Workers developed the only worker-led program that fights for fair wages and, safe working conditions while holding the fast food business and supermarkets accountable!
Unfortunately not all farmers and not all food retailers have signed up for the Fair Food Program leaving us have the situation where the workers who grow and harvest our food are hungry. This is partly caused by access as a broken rural infrastructure means that getting to a supermarket is challenging. Additionally, farmworkers are paid poverty wages so they cannot afford to buy healthy food for themselves or their families.
If this concerns you, check out the Fair Food Program and buy food that is grown under Fair Food principles. It will taste so much better!!
