Contribution of Food Production to Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Part 1: Biggest GHG contributors
Recent research from Europe indicates that about a third of man-made greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions are from food production and manufacturing, mostly from agriculture. In 2015, the six top emitting economies responsible for 51% of global GHG emissions were: China with 13.5% of the global total, Indonesia with 8.8%, the United States with 8.2%, Brazil with 7.4%, the European Union 6.7% and India with 6.3%
The good news is that each person’s food related emissions were less in 2015 than in 1990.
Can we reduce the GHG emissions from the food system by changing our agricultural practices, how we process our food and what we eat?
