This month I wrote about how the food system in the US has a huge problem because of the fact that some many unexpected foods are being found to carry pathogenic bacteria. There must be a better way to run a large food system than recalling product after we’ve found it contains pathogens. Any ideas? Drop me a message.
Books to Consider
I started reading Company of One by Paul Jarvis. I’ve been following Paul’s newsletters for a while so I was excited when his book came out. It is very helpful for me as a small business owner and is making me consider what I consider success in a different way. I’m halfway through, so I am sure I will have more comments next month.
Are you reading any good books you want to share with other food entrepreneurs? Let me know what I should be reading.
Compliance (Regulatory News)
Earlier this month, the FDA released the second installment of draft guidance for the intentional adulteration rule. The second installment follows on from the first installment published last year. The main purpose of this guidance document is to help companies develop a food defense plan to ensure their products are not intentionally adulterated. Additionally the guidance covers information on how to conduct a vulnerability study.
As a parting gesture, FDA Commissioner Gottlieb submitted a budget to Congress that would increase the funding for food safety.
Contact me to set up a time to chat about how these regulations will affect your business or if you need a food defense plan or need to conduct a vulnerability study.
Food for Thought
March is National Nutrition Month and it is also National Peanut Month and National Flour Month, even though I’ve heard less about the last two than the first. Coming up, April is National BLT Month and National Garlic Month amongst others. Personally I particularly excited about it being National Grilled Cheese Month, especially if I can combine it with garlic somehow. Mmmmm. What will you do to celebrate April as a food month?
