Food News for January 2022
Happy 2022!
I hope you are well and staying warm and safe. The snow just started falling here from the winter storm and I am looking for a cozy weekend. I will remain tucked up with tea, cookies, and a good book probably. I hope you had a similarly cozy weekend.

NJ Food Cottage Law
New Jersey finally passed a Food Cottage Law for home bakers. There is a limited list of non-perishable food that can be made under a NJ Food Cottage License and food must be hand delivered. Internet sales are allowed but the product cannot be shipped. So this is a hyperlocal food business. It is a great start for food entrepreneurs.

Grapefruit Food Science and Food Systems
While writing my book, I get to explore food and recently I looked at grapefruit. I was fascinated to find out that eating grapefruit when on some drugs can be dangerous and that the grapefruit tree was first spotted in Barbados!
I was also interested to find out that some people don't find grapefruit bitter. It is all down to genetics.
Read more about grapefruit on my blog.
Food Safety Mid Atlantic News
I had a busy summer and fall because I started doing produce safety audits for a group GAP in PA. It was fun! I learned a lot visiting the mostly Amish farms in Lancaster Co and some of what I learned has helped me understand the food system from farm to table and the challenges small farmers face.
After this experience I am better able to give advice to my clients who use fresh fruits and vegetables. This helps them know what they should be looking for in their Approved Supplier Program.
Is your Approved Supplier Program up to date? Book a free consulting call to get help to check your program and your other food safety programs.
See you next month!
In the meantime check out Food Crumb where I post articles about food science, food safety and food systems.
All the best,
Cathy
